Chinese immigrants were the first Asians to reach Oakland, arriving in the 1850s, and the quarter they settled downtown has been occupied continuously since. Japanese families followed in the 1890s, Koreans in the 1900s, Filipinos in the 1930s and 1940s and Southeast Asians from the 1970s, so the district that kept the Chinatown name is in practice a pan Asian one. Locals say Oakland Chinatown to keep it distinct from the one across the bay.
