Filipino families began arriving in Jersey City in numbers after the 1965 immigration act, many of them doctors and nurses recruited into the county's hospitals, and they settled around those hospitals and the Catholic parishes near Five Corners. Phil-Am Food opened in 1973 as the first Filipino-owned grocery on the East Coast. In the early 1990s the city renamed a stretch of Grove Street as Manila Avenue.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
