Woodhaven Junction, where the Rockaway trains split off
1962
Woodhaven, Queens, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Two Long Island Rail Road lines crossed here at Atlantic Avenue, the Atlantic Branch running below ground and the Rockaway Beach Branch on an elevated structure above it. The Rockaway line hauled summer crowds down to the beaches until the railroad gave the route up in 1962. The station underneath closed on January 7, 1977. The abandoned right of way is still cut through Queens, and what to do with it is still argued about.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
