Willow Run builds a B-24 bomber every 59 minutes
1942
Willow Run bomber plant, Ypsilanti Township, Michigan
Ford put up this plant between Ypsilanti Township and Belleville from 1940 to 1942 to build the Consolidated B-24 Liberator on a moving line, which nobody had tried at this scale with an aircraft. At peak the plant turned out a finished bomber every 59 minutes, and its line ran until May 1945, accounting for close to half of every Liberator built. Production ran so far ahead of need that the military could not absorb the aircraft. A whole settlement, Willow Village, went up to house the workers, and kept its own post office until the plant shut on 30 June 1945.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
