Wilkinsburg stayed a dry town for eighty years

Wilkinsburg was laid out by men who wanted a religious, education-minded town with no saloons in it, and the borough held that line long after national Prohibition ended. It voted itself dry in 1935 and stayed that way, which is how it picked up the nickname the Holy City. Not until 2015 did the rules change to let a small number of restaurants serve alcohol. For most of the twentieth century it was also the largest borough in Pennsylvania.
