Widener University, the Pennsylvania Military College until 1972
1821
Chester, Pennsylvania
The school traces to 1821 and spent most of its life as a military college, taking the name Pennsylvania Military College and drilling cadets on a campus in the middle of an industrial city. It dropped the military identity in 1972 and renamed itself for Eleanor Elkins Widener. It now enrols around 3,500 undergraduates and runs law schools in Harrisburg and Wilmington.
