The Deshong Art Museum, given to Chester and then stolen from

Alfred O. Deshong left his mansion, his twenty two acre grounds and his art collection to the city of Chester when he died, a bequest worth more than twenty four million dollars in current money. The gallery opened in Deshong Park in 1914 and showed the collection until 1984. It spent 1961 to 1978 doing duty as a public library, fell into disrepair and lost works to theft. What survived went to Widener University.
