The legislature created the school in 1901 and it took its first 186 students the next year with fourteen faculty. It changed names three times before settling on Texas Woman's University in 1957. Men were admitted to graduate programmes in 1972 and undergraduate ones in 1994, and it is still the largest state-supported university in the country built primarily for women.
