White Fence Farm, the Route 66 chicken house a coal magnate opened for his weekend guests
1926
Romeoville, Illinois
Stuyvesant Peabody, who ran Peabody Coal, kept a 450 acre thoroughbred farm at Lemont and had nowhere nearby to feed the guests he brought out for weekends, so in the early 1920s he opened a restaurant in a converted farmhouse across the road. It was already busy when Route 66 opened past the door in November 1926, and Duncan Hines was writing it up by the end of the decade. The Hastert family bought the place in 1954 and built its reputation on fried chicken.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
