Weequahic Park, built over the Waverly Fair Grounds
1899
Weequahic Park, Weequahic, Newark, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Before the park there was the Waverly Fair Grounds, an agricultural fair with a half mile racing oval cut around the 1850s, and Ulysses Grant came to watch the horses there in 1872. The Essex County Park Commission started buying the land in 1896 and held about 265 acres by 1899, and the Olmsted Brothers laid the grounds out around an eighty acre lake. At 311 acres it is the largest park in Newark. Its historic district was added to the National Register in 2003.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
