The first college in California allowed to give women a degree
1868
Belmont, California
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur opened an academy in San Jose in 1851 and were chartered in 1868 as the College of Notre Dame, the first institution in the state with authority to grant a baccalaureate degree to women. The sisters bought Ralston's Belmont estate in 1922 and moved the college onto it the following year. It is the third oldest college in California, and after 2021 it wound down its undergraduate programme and became a graduate school.
