Grace Episcopal Church and the oldest graves in Jamaica
1862
Jamaica, Queens, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The parish dates to 1702 and the churchyard holds burials from 1734, which makes this stretch of Jamaica Avenue some of the longest used ground in Queens. The present rough sandstone church with its steep roof and sharp spire went up between 1861 and 1862, and a chancel was added at the rear in 1901. The Tudor Revival parish house followed in 1912. Downtown Jamaica grew up around the churchyard rather than the other way round.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
