Washington-Hoover Airport, where a public road crossed the runway
1933
Arlington, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Washington's commercial airport from 1933 to 1941 was created by merging two adjoining fields, Hoover Field and Washington Airport, that had each been too small on their own. It kept their problems: short runways, no room to expand, and a highway running straight across the landing ground. It closed to the public in 1941, the War Department bought the land, and the Pentagon and its parking lots now sit on it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
