He was born in a farmhouse his father built, on an island he called Paumanok by its Lenape name and returned to all his life for the sound of the surf, which he said taught him the line of his verse. Leaves of Grass came out of a man who had been a printer, a teacher and a loafer here first. The house stands next to a shopping mall named for him.
