Walt Whitman buys the only house he ever owned, on Mickle Street
1884
Camden, New Jersey
Whitman paid $1,750 for this small frame house in 1884 and lived here until he died in 1892. It was the only property he ever owned, bought after a stroke left him dependent on friends and admirers. He assembled the deathbed edition of Leaves of Grass in the front room. The street is now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
