When the port authority proposed naming its new suspension bridge for Whitman in 1955, the Camden diocese objected in print. Its newspaper ran articles calling his poetry indecent, and clergy wrote to the authority arguing he lacked the stature for the honour and suggesting Joyce Kilmer instead. The authority kept the name and the bridge opened in 1957, landing on the Jersey side at Gloucester City.
