Walnut Park holds around 15,000 people in about three quarters of a square mile, a density above 20,000 residents per square mile and higher than the cities pressing in on every side. It was first counted as a separate place in the 1970 census and has never incorporated, so Los Angeles County supplies its policing, streets and parks directly. The county classes it as a disadvantaged unincorporated community, one of the pockets left over when the surrounding towns drew their boundaries.
