Houghton gave up its city hall and got the state's first neighbourhood council
1968
Kirkland, Washington
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Houghton incorporated as its own city in 1948, named for the lumberman Willard Houghton, and counted 1,065 residents in the 1950 census. It voted to be annexed by Kirkland in 1968 and out of that deal became the first community in Washington with its own neighbourhood council. The Seattle Seahawks ran their headquarters here until they moved to Renton in 2008.
