Valley Plaza opened along Laurel Canyon Boulevard in 1951 as one of the first shopping centres in the San Fernando Valley. By the middle of the decade it was reported to be the biggest on the West Coast and the third biggest in the country, sprawling west along Victory Boulevard as separate developers added to it and traded under the one name. It pulled the Valley's postwar shoppers away from downtown Los Angeles. Much of it stood empty by the end of the century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
