Plaza del Lago, the second oldest open air shopping center in the country

Spanish Court opened on Sheridan Road in 1928 and is still the second oldest open air shopping center in the United States. It sat in No Man's Land, the unincorporated strip between Wilmette and Kenilworth that answered to no village until Wilmette annexed it in 1942. The center was rebuilt and renamed Plaza del Lago during the redevelopment of the 1960s.
