UT Dallas started as a private research centre paid for by Texas Instruments
1961
Richardson, Texas
The three men who built Texas Instruments, Cecil Green, Erik Jonsson and Eugene McDermott, chartered the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in February 1961 to keep research scientists in North Texas. It was renamed the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies in 1967. The founders handed the whole thing to the state in 1969 and the governor signed the bill that turned it into the University of Texas at Dallas.
