The University of North Florida opens with no freshmen
1972
Jacksonville, Florida
The legislature authorised the university in 1965 and it opened in October 1972 on 1,300 acres of pine flatwoods east of the city. It admitted only juniors, seniors and graduate students, a design meant to receive Florida community college graduates rather than school leavers, and 2,027 of them enrolled in the first term. Freshmen were not taken until 1984. Much of the campus is still held as nature preserve.
