Union Hill and West Hoboken merge into Union City
1925
Union Hill, Union City, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
German families had been settling the ridge here since about 1851, and Union Hill grew up alongside the older embroidery town of West Hoboken below it. The two were separate municipalities on the same hillside, splitting services and taxes between them, until they voted to combine in 1925. The new city took the name Union City and kept both street grids, which is why the numbered streets restart partway up the slope.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
