Umoja Village, the shantytown that occupied a vacant Liberty City lot

A group called Take Back the Land occupied the corner of 62nd Street and NW 17th Avenue in October 2006. The lot had sat empty for roughly eight years after the city knocked down the low income housing that stood there. They put up tents, then wood framed shanties, and housed people who had nowhere else to go. Umoja is Swahili for unity.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
