Tolomato Cemetery, on the site of a Guale mission village

A 1737 map of St. Augustine marks Tolomato on this spot, a village of Guale converts and the Franciscans who ministered to them, sitting outside the town by the Rosario defence line. The village burial ground held a section set aside for people who had escaped slavery in the Carolinas and been baptised Catholic, the same route to freedom that produced Fort Mose two miles north. The Catholic cemetery that followed is still here.
