Moore-Jackson Cemetery, a 1733 burial ground in Woodside

A family burial ground on the estate of Samuel and Charity Moore, used from 1733 to about 1868 and one of the few 18th century cemeteries left in New York City. Roughly 48 people lie in the 20,000 square foot plot, and the oldest stone still carrying a legible inscription belongs to Augustine Moore, who died in 1769. The family stopped caring for it around 1910, a survey in 1919 counted 42 stones, and Works Progress Administration workers moved the survivors to the 54th Street edge in 1935. The city took the land in 1954.
