When it opened in December 1903 it held the longest suspension span in the world, and it was the first of the East River bridges built with steel towers rather than masonry. Cheap fares across it emptied the crowded Lower East Side into Williamsburg so quickly that the crossing picked up the nickname the Jews' Highway.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
