The San Mateo Bridge, built by a private company across the widest part of the bay

The first crossing here opened in March 1929, built and tolled by a private company rather than the state, and it ran mostly as a low timber trestle because the bay at this point is shallow and enormously wide. California bought the bridge in 1951 and replaced it in 1967 with the high steel span and long causeway that carry Route 92 today. It remains the longest fixed crossing in the state.
