The Commodore Barry Bridge, built for a highway that was never built
1974
Chester, Pennsylvania
Charles Homler · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
This cantilever span opened in February 1974, carrying US 322 from Chester across the Delaware to Bridgeport, New Jersey. Its main span of 1,644 feet was the longest cantilever span in North America when it was finished. The approach was designed to feed a freeway on the Pennsylvania side that was cancelled, so traffic off the bridge still empties onto local streets.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
