A five million volt Van de Graaff generator shaped like a giant steel pear sat at this borough's eastern edge, on the campus that housed the Westinghouse Research Laboratories from 1916 to 1956. It ran from 1937 to 1958 and was the first industrial particle accelerator built for nuclear physics research anywhere. Landmark status arrived in 2010 and the thing came down in 2015 when the site was cleared for redevelopment. The borough itself took its name from Forest Hills in Queens.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
