Churchill, the borough Westinghouse filled with scientists
1956
Churchill, Pennsylvania
Westinghouse put its corporate research laboratories on a hillside campus in this borough, built between 1953 and 1956 to a design by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill with Voorhees, Walker, Foley and Smith, and enlarged again by 1962. Around 1,500 scientists, engineers and technicians worked on the site, on metallurgy, electronics and nuclear power. Preservationists now rank the campus alongside Bell Labs at Holmdel as postwar corporate research architecture. Westinghouse wound the operation down and most of the buildings stand empty.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
