Monroeville was farmland until the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened an interchange here in 1950 and Route 22 became worth building on. US Steel consolidated its research laboratories in the township in 1953, Koppers followed in 1961, Bituminous Coal Research in 1962, and Westinghouse put up nuclear research buildings in 1965 and 1971. Retail arrived on the same road, starting with the Miracle Mile centre in 1954. A farming township of a few thousand people became a research and shopping corridor within about twenty years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
