James Alexander Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, named this 60 acre estate Nevis after his father's birthplace. A branch of the du Pont family later gave it to Columbia University, which built a 400 MeV synchrocyclotron in the grounds between 1947 and 1949. Columbia's president Dwight Eisenhower switched it on in June 1950, and for the two decades it ran it was one of the most productive particle accelerators in the world.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
