U-boats sank roughly four hundred ships off this coast in 1942, working at night against vessels silhouetted by the lights of shore towns that had not been ordered to black out. People on the beach watched tankers burn. It was among the worst American defeats of the war and was largely kept out of the papers. The shipping losses here alone nearly broke the Atlantic supply line.
