The Brooklyn Navy Yard, builder of battleships
1801
Wallabout Bay, Brooklyn
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Built the Monitor's rival, the Maine, and the Missouri, and employed 70,000 people during the Second World War, a fifth of them women. Prison ships moored here in the Revolution killed more Americans than every battle combined, some 11,500 dead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
