The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument in Fort Greene Park

More Americans died on the British prison hulks anchored in Wallabout Bay than in every battle of the Revolution combined, perhaps 11,500 of them, and their bones washed out of the shoreline for decades afterward. Stanford White designed the 149 foot Doric column dedicated here in November 1908, with Adolph Weinman's eight ton bronze brazier on top. The remains lie in slate boxes in a crypt under the stairs.
