The Volunteer Life Saving Corps, first of its kind in the country
1912
Jacksonville Beach, Florida
A drowning in 1912 pushed Dr. Lyman Haskell and Clarence MacDonald to train a volunteer lifeguard unit on what was then Pablo Beach. The American Red Cross chartered it in April 1914 as its first such corps in the United States, and other Florida beaches copied the model. The station on the sand is on the National Register, and the corps still works this water, the last all volunteer beach patrol of its kind left in the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
