A British tanker was torpedoed offshore and burning fuel spread across the water. John Allen Midgett and five men took a motor surfboat through the flames repeatedly and brought off forty-two of the fifty-one crew. Every one of them received a Gold Lifesaving Medal and a British decoration, and it is generally reckoned the most difficult rescue in the service's history.
