Pea Island and the only all-Black lifesaving crew

Richard Etheridge, born enslaved on this island and a veteran of the Colored Troops, was made keeper, the first Black man to command a lifesaving station. The station burned down within weeks and the crew rebuilt it. In 1896 they went into a hurricane surf that no boat could be launched into and brought nine people off the schooner E.S. Newman by swimming a line out, twice, ten times over. They were awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal in 1996, a century late.
