Black Hammock Island and the mission of Santa Cruz de Guadalquini
1684
Jacksonville, Florida
People have fished these creeks for something like 6,000 years, and the shell middens they left are still in the woods. Spanish records place the Mocama mission of Santa Cruz de Guadalquini here from 1684, after it was pulled back from the sea islands, and raiders out of Carolina destroyed what was left of the community in 1702. University of North Florida students located the site in the early 2000s along with material reaching back to 2500 BCE. Cedar Point at the south end is now part of the Timucuan preserve.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
