Shoals off Tarrytown and Ossining had needed marking since the mid 1800s, but land at the two obvious spots was too expensive, so the federal government put the light half a mile out in the river instead. The conical steel sparkplug tower went up in the 1880s with living quarters inside, the only family station on the lower Hudson. Keepers and their children lived out there on the water until it was automated.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
