Coney Island Light and its last civilian keeper
1890
Sea Gate, Brooklyn
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A skeletal steel tower at the western tip of the island, first established in 1890, rebuilt in 1920 and still lit. Frank Schubert kept it from 1960 until he died in 2003, by which point he was one of the last civilian lighthouse keepers in the country. The light was automated in 1989 and he stayed on in the keeper's house.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
