The Tanner House, a hardware merchant's villa kept as the family left it
1857
Aurora, Illinois
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
William Tanner sold hardware in Aurora and built this Italianate house in 1857 on the bluff west of the river. His descendants lived in it for eighty years and handed it to the Aurora Historical Society in 1936 with the contents still in place. That is unusual. Most house museums are furnished afterwards with period pieces gathered from elsewhere, and this one is largely the family's own things.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
