The Sunken Forest
1600
Sailors Haven, Fire Island, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Behind the primary dune of the barrier island, in the hollow the sand protects, a two-hundred-year-old holly and sassafras forest grows below sea level, its canopy shorn perfectly flat by the salt spray that kills any branch that dares above the dune line. You walk down into it on a boardwalk, out of the glare, into a green room the ocean is not allowed to enter.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
