The Peter Kirk Building, centrepiece of a steel city that never opened
1889
Kirkland, Washington

Peter Kirk came from England intending to build an integrated steel mill on Lake Washington and a town to run it, and he put this building up in 1889 as that town's centrepiece. The Panic of 1893 killed the mill before it produced any steel. Kirkland's business district later shifted south, which is likely why the building escaped urban renewal. It is the oldest commercial structure on the Eastside, and the Masonic lodge and the Sears building on the same corner survive from the same short boom.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
