The state forest in the middle of the mill cities
1941
Lowell, Dracut and Tyngsborough, Massachusetts
Lowell is the fifth largest city in Massachusetts and most of its ground went under mills, canals and triple deckers. The northwest corner of it did not. The state started buying farmland here in 1941 and the forest now runs to 1,109 acres across the city line into Dracut and Tyngsborough, about 180 acres of it ponds and swamp. It leaves the built out end of the Merrimack Valley with a piece of unbuilt land wedged into the middle of it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
