The State Fairgrounds dirt oval at Woodward and Eight Mile
1899
Detroit, Michigan
This dirt oval was laid out in 1899 for horse racing, on ground bought to give the Michigan State Fair a permanent home. Joseph Lowthian Hudson, the department store owner, assembled the site at Woodward and what is now Eight Mile and sold it to the Michigan State Agricultural Society for one dollar in April 1905. A 5,000 seat grandstand stood at the east end of the fairgrounds by 1908, and the track ran thoroughbred and harness racing before the car industry turned it over to automobiles. The grandstand was declared unsafe in 1971 and demolished.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
