William H. Clark's Empire City Trotting Club cut a half mile dirt oval at Central Park and Yonkers Avenues in 1899, close enough to the city line to pull a New York crowd. Thoroughbreds ran here for part of the twentieth century before the track settled back into harness racing. It now runs more races in a year than any other track in the sport, with a slot parlour attached.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
