The St. Claude Avenue Bridge carries the Lower Ninth back across the canal

The Industrial Canal cut the Lower Ninth Ward off from the rest of New Orleans, and this bascule bridge, built as part of the same project in 1919, is how the neighbourhood got back over. Chicago's Strauss Bascule Bridge Company designed it and Bethlehem Steel built it, with two pairs of railroad tracks down the centre of the lift span and car lanes on either side. The rails are gone and traffic uses their room, and the span still lifts beside the canal lock.
