The Murray Morgan Bridge, a lift span built to carry the city's water pipe

The 11th Street bridge opened in 1913 to replace an 1894 swing span, designed by the bridge firm of Waddell and Harrington. It rides unusually high above the water for a lift bridge, was built on a variable grade, and its overhead span was engineered to carry a water main across the waterway alongside the traffic. Tacoma later renamed it for Murray Morgan, the Northwest historian who once worked as its bridge tender.
